I pierce from the top, but I do check the bottom of the tongue before doing the piercing to make sure there are no bumps, odd veins or other things I should be concerned about. You can pierce from the bottom though. Its something that varies from piercer to piercer.

All piercings hurt to an extent, but only the tongue swells as much as it does. Its more of a muscle, not flesh, so its tougher to pierce. I don't have a tongue piercing, wouldn't get one either due to all the oral hygiene issues (gum recession, bad breath, chipped teeth, weak enamel, the area under your tongue can be rubbed raw by the jewelry). However, I don't know how much it will hurt you. No one else can tell you this either.

Cost is just like pain: it varies. Some places will charge $50 others might charge $80. You'll have to ask the piercer at the shop and if you don't like the price, go elsewhere. But price doesn't reflect quality. Cheap piercings aren't always bad, but at the same time, expensive piercings aren't always good.

My tongue piercing was very painful, I mean, its a piece of metal getting shoved through part of your body, so of course its going to hurt.

Also, make sure to eat about half an hour before getting the piercing done, otherwise you could pass out from a low blood sugar attack.

Usually the piercer will pierce your tongue from top to bottom.

It depends on where you go usually, but I paid about 60 dollars for my tongue piercing. Ask around at different shops though before you get the piercing done, because you can find them as low as 20 dollars.

Also, asking around gives you a chance to get to know the person who could potentially be doing the piercing. Would you really want someone you'd never met shoving something sharp into your body? Probably not.

This will also give you a chance to make sure that their shop is clean, and ask them questions about how the piercing would be done, what kind of things would be used, what the barbells look like, and how they sterilize the equiptment.

If the shop you go do has very nice people working, its clean, and the atmosphere is relaxed and happy, then by all means, get the piercing done there.

Use your gut instinct. If something about the piercer or the shop doesn't feel right, then don't get it done there.

I've had my tongue pierced for almost three years now and honestly the worst part of it was the clamp. It didn't really hurt when they pierced it but the next morning when I woke up with it completely swollen, it was a bit painful. I lived on ice chips and soups for a week and a half...

Mine was pierced from the top to the bottom and it cost me about $40 to have it done in a VERY reputable tattoo parlor in my state.

If you decide to have it done, follow their directions to a "t" on how to care for it properly and you will be fine. Also, be sure and change the barbell to a shorter one when the swelling goes down or you will rip it a bit...If you are concerned about causing damage to your teeth, they make a lot of acrylic barbells and flexible ones as well that won't do damage like the metal ones do.

Tongue piercings are very typically done in one fell swoop from the top of the tongue. It is much harder for the muscle to relax if you held the tongue up for them to do it. Plus, the pressure would squish the halves together, making it harder for the needle to go through and increasing chances of hitting a nerve.

In my general area of living, tongue piercings cost between $35-$50. It's usually the teenie shops that do it for $35, but the local store that does them cheap has a bad tendency to pierce sideways and require a more painful healing and re-piercing of scar tissue. It pays off to pay extra, so to speak.

I have had it done twice. Both times it was done from the top. It isn't is painful as it seems. To me it just feels like pressure put on your tongue. It stings a little when they put the barbell in and is a little sore after wards and I had a lisp for a couple of days, but I have had many piercings and its not painful. My cartilage ear piercing was 10x more painful that than. I paid $25 each time.

i've had my tongue pierced about 2 years ago, and it didn't hurt one bit. the belly button or ears definately hurt more. they put a clamp on your tongue, the pierce you from the top, then as they pull the needle out, they will put the jewellery in from the bottom so the hole doesn't close up. it cost me $40-60(canadian) i can't remember exactly. there is no pain, and it is an awsome piercing to have.

I have mine pierced twice. I swear it does not hurt that bad because you are focused on the clamp on your tongue. The clamp don't hurt either, its alot of pressure. First they have you stick your tongue out as far as you can, dry it off, put the clamp on the end, dot the spot, and push a straight needle through from top to bottom, then put the jewelry in. Not bad! Its just the next day after you wake up that hurts like hel! !!!! Cost me $40 each. Im in PA.

I've had my tongue pierced for about 4 years, it didn't hurt, it was "uncomfortable" more than anything. The piercer put the needle under my tongue and pierced me, I don't think I've ever heard of a piercer doing it the other way (they need to figure out where the veins are in your tongue). Mine cost about $70 AUD.

Personally my ear piercings hurt more.

Stick your tongue out, they grab it with a clamp to keep it extended. Dot the spot, straight needle right through it.

Jewelry put in was the hardest part cuz I could feel the ridges going through.

Scale of 1-10 pain 3.

I paid $40 in 1999

Biting your tongur hurts more in my opinion...the worst part of a tongue piercing is the swelling and learning to chew and swallow with a tongue ring in your mouth....I went to the parlor...he looked at my tongue and checked the veins. you know to make sure my tongue wasn't too veiny...we went in a room I rinsed with listerine for 30 seconds...and he showed me the needle....he discussed thr procedure and made sure I wasn't nervous. Then he washed his hands and put some gloves on...he marked a dot on my tongue to see if I liked it there. Then he made me keep my tongue out so it can stay dry...then he clamped my tongue and stuck the needle in it from top to bottom in one swift motion..then he inserted the actual tongue ring....then he went over after care...you know rinse with listerine twice a day, eat ice because of swelling, no making out or oral sex for 4-6 weeks...blaa blaa blaa, It cost me $20 because they were having a sale....but it usually runs about $35-50...so you know. It didn't hurt me....its just a pain in the butt to take care of thats all.
