During the second world war, which was the only one were any large number of carriers lost, the aircraft of a carrier that was sunk had two choices. Either they landed on other available carriers or they ditched. There were problems. The available carriers had to accept their own aircraft before other aircraft and they were small ships in comparison to today's. If they practised land and toss, that is pilots landed, alit and the aircraft was pushed off the side to make room for others. If they were forced to ditch, particularly at night, the pilots had a very rigorous time if they were among the lucky to be rescued. G.H. Bush was in the water during the Battle of Midway. A pilot in the water was a small target to sight.

It has happened before, at the battle of midway and the battle of the coral sea, and the battles of leyte gulf and the phillipine sea, on both japanese and american side some landed on other carriers in the battlegroup, some ditched at sea, in some cases they couldn't find their carrier and because of radio silence they went into the water and died of exposure i think the lexington and yorktown were both destroyes, maybe a couple of others, but i know all japanese carriers in the war were destroyed. 'scratch one carrier!'

to another carrier or the nearest friendly land base. They may have to get some midair refueling done, but they'll be fine.

They will either divert to a friendly airfield (hopefully air refueling is handy) or they will crash at sea. The crew will eject near friendly surface ships to be recovered.
