If he's a little overweight, he just needs to start healthy habits. Choose a sport he enjoys and do it a little more every day. Definitely walking, bike riding, skate boarding, working around the house anything but sitting around and watching tv/video games. Cut out junk food especially soft drinks. Those things are full of empty calories; watch out for sugar, high fructose corn syrup, trans fats. It may be tough to get him started but that's a critical age to build self esteem, self discipline.

He shouldn't necessary diet, just develop better eating and exercising habits. Stay off of the fast food and processed food. Eat more fruits and veggies. Drink 6-8 cups of water per day. Walk more places instead of getting a drive. Join a sports team or exercise at a gym. Make sure he gets 30 plus minutes of physical activity a day!!! Young people just don't get enough. This will help his self esteem as well because exercise releases the 'feel good' hormones into our bodies.Check out www.am-i-fat.com for info on his weight and what you can do. Good Luck!!

One can lose 1 pound a week by changing their calorie balance by 500 calories a day. In other words, he can burn off 500 more by exercise (sports team, one hour of walking, etc), or by eating 500 fewer calories a day (one order of McD's is 500 calories), or some combination of both.

I'd suggest that you contact a group like Weight Watchers, or at least work with people who are WW members. They have tons of ideas on how to eat foods that don't have tons of calories while making you feel full.

Finally, you need to check your groceries. Do you buy diet pop, or the sugary stuff? A 13 year old will generally not go out and buy groceries, they will eat what you bring home, and it's up to you to bring home the good stuff. Do you buy lots of munchies, while having nothing healthy for snacks? Do you have cheesy potatos at every supper?

First, get a bodyfat scale. Find out how much is fat and how much is muscle and bone.

Walking is a waste of time. Get him The Step and a weighted vest. I like VMAX. Do 5-15 minutes every day. Motivate him by doing it yourself also.

Buy a couple of 5 gallon pails. Put water in them. Have him Mon-Wed-Fri, bend over, pick up the pails. Hold the pails with his elbows bent, his knees bent, and bent over for 1 minute. That will make his body strong and muscle strong. Once a week, add a little more water to the pails. Lids help, if you can get them too.

that depends on his carriage....how tall is he? was he a big baby at birth (length/weight)? let him go out for sports at school if that's an option for you...or even just get some other kids from the neighborhood to play baseball or football or basketball, what-have-you, or just go out for bike rides. let him discover what physical activity he enjoys the most and then encourage him to do that as often as possible. boys' metabolisms are generally more active than girls' and absolutely ANY activity that doesn't involve sitting in front of a tv or video game screen or a computer will help him. hope this helped!!

Exercise for anyone (but especially a 13 year old) should be fun if that person is going to be motivated and continue the exercise. Let him do something he enjoys - swim, rollerblade, ride his bike, etc. As long as he exercises for 30 minutes per day. He should also add flexibility exercises into his daily routine to add tone and conditioning to his body.

Ok Dad ... I am a father of 3, a husband of 26 years and also a Pastor in Texas ... I have introduced my family and my church to a great health plan ... It can be found at www.newlifestyletoday.org ... It's not a diet plan as you don't skip meals, but you add this to your current life ... I have lost 18 pounds in 21 days as well as dropped my pant size by 2" by simply adding this to my life and without exercise as I physically cannot exercise due to degenerative disc in my back ... Several folks in the church and their teenage children are seeing great results from this ... God bless and praying for your family and that you get them on this today ... Pastor James - Texas
