I already understand that it is a no-no to use them in fog, in snow, and in rain. I also know that they were designed for parked cars.
Here's the thing. I was driving my car and all of a sudden something went wrong and I couldn't go as fast. (I don't want to hear opinions about what went wrong.) So, since I could only go about 5-10 mph under the speed limit, I turned on my hazards until I got it home, which was less than a mile. I thought that this was the obvious thing to do, but I have heard strong criticism to the contrary. This was by no means a highway; I pulled into the right lane on my side, and there was no shoulder. What do you think?

using hazards when you can't match the prevaling speed of surrounding traffic is perfectly acceptable - in some states its the law on freeways if you drop below the minimum required speed, in PA in the mountains it says use flashers under 50 mph I believe

Well, by law, if you cannot do the speed limit, put on your flashers, stay in the right lane, in case some one is coming up behind you going faster then you, lets them know you are having car problems, and you are suppose to use your flashers in the fog, and heavy rain, or blizzard snow storm, cause you cannot not drive the speed limit in neither conditions... no matter what road you are on, are how far your are from your home. it only takes a second for someone not to notice you.. its only for parked cars that are broke down, or pulled over to help someone else

Use the risk lights fixtures every time your automobile may be a risk to different dirvers. The cop is merely doing his activity. What in case you mandatory help and he handed over your subject? each so often cops provide up at a parked automobile with the adverse aspects on and stumble on a ineffective physique in it. in case you do no longer prefer to be stricken, in case you are able to, you ought to pull onto a side highway or automobile parking zone. upload oil with the engine off. each thing else is immaterial.

I always thought that hazard lights were there to inform other motorists that Hey, something's going on here so you should use caution when driving close to me.

Use them anytime there is a "HAZARD" it's up to you when to use them. Truckers turn theirs on when going slow up a hill.....
You did the right thing.
