I've always wondered the same thing. It makes more sense than anything else. After all, our sun is the giver of life. Not that I'm going to worship an inaminate object. Or an animate one for that matter.

A simple worship of the sun works in a small group of people; a tribe, even a small settlement. But when it grows larger, gods must be invented to create an agenda for those people, since a larger group of people needs leaders and politics and more than just the survival granted by the sun.
