People like to be unique - the name "Wendy" was first coined by James M Barrie (the writer of Peter Pan) and since then, it has become a name that has been used throughout the world!
Names have to have an origin. Then again, I like really traditional English named (George Charlotte) and my folks are totally against me naming a child that one day! Strange...

I personally think that children with "different" or uncommon names have a better advantage, and don't get me wrong, I'm NOT talking about names like picadilli or rain forest or something like that but rather MY name for example...my name is MikkiStar and YES that is my REAL name...it's funny, because if i had a dollar for every time someone asked me if that was really my name, well...lets just say I'd NEVER have to work again. When i was younger i didn't really like it...but as an adult, i LOVE it...everyone knows who I am when you mention the name and I'm NEVER confused with anyone else. When i had my 3 children i decided to do the same with them, for example, my oldest son's name is Thaddaeus, i have yet to meet a person with that name and at his school and around town, EVERYONE knows who he is. Different and unique enough to be cool, but not too strange.
footnote here: the only problem I've ever encountered with my name was someone said to me one time MikkiStar, sorta like the porn star, and i was like Huh? well apparently there is a porn star with the same name as myself. Oh well....it's always good for a laugh, but i love my name just the same. :)

I don't know why people do this.
I am pregnant and looking at baby names, and it seems that everytime I bring up a name somebody has a reason why it is a terrible name. They say things like, "I knew this guy in high school....etc." Maybe these parents just wanted to name their kids something that no one had ever heard before.
Personally I don't want my kid to get beat up at school because of something I named them. If they are gonna get picked on it should be for something they have control over. That is why I try to pick names that are "normal" but not overused.

Well in reality I wanted to name my kids vanessa and allison. didn't happen that way. Now I have Aaliyah and Aalyssa. They are odd but not so odd names. Their father had most of the input with picking their names since all I wanted to do was sleep after I had them...lol. I see now that my kids couldn't have better names. I couldn't see aaliyah being named vanessa, she just doesn't look like a vanessa. Same with lyss. My name is common and I hate it. My fiance has already decided that when we have a son, he would not be named after him. If you were a guy, would you want your name to be James William Peter (last name) Jr? lol. I could never give my kid that long of a name. What was his dad thinking? lol

I have two sons who both have original names and they love them. If I send them to school I really only have to put their first name on anything as there is only one person at the school with that name. I would of course not have named them something like 'treeroot' or cloud lining', but as a person who has a very common name and hates it, I believe that an original name has its advantages. I once worked at a small business in which there were 5 other people with the same name as me. I used to think 'why did mum and dad name me the same thing as everyone else.' My sons have strong masculine names that may not be the usual ones, but everyone knows who you are talking about if you say their name as it is original. Why would anyone want to be the same as everyone else anyway?

Yeah, I agree with you and I don't understand why.I think these parents are only thinking about themselves and trying to be unusual way too hard. I saw a question here on Yahoo "Should I name my baby girl Serenity" and the lady was apparenty going to do so even though many people told her that serenity is a word, not a name. Arguments like "don't you understand that they will have to go to school with this name" didn't seem to have an effect.

I know what your saying! names that others make fun of is not cool at all. names of alcoholic beverages tend to be nice at the time but go into a bar and tell anybody your name, you get a drink without asking. maybe that's a bad example but you get the picture. The way I figure it if people say that's a wierd name, just reply whats your name? WOW! that's a wierd name also.

They just want their kids to be special....and if it's really weird then the parents don't realize it. Also, there is a period of confusion for new Moms that lasts about 2 weeks. I remember being really scatter-brained when I gave birth and spelled my daughter's name a certain way, thinking it was the Dutch way (her dad was Dutch), but a few weeks later I realized it was the German spelling....took me years to tell my husband but he did have an Oma that was German anyway.

Yes, have you ever been in a school classroom and had 4 children with the same name? Not only is it hard on the teacher, what about those poor children who have no idea who is being called on!
