have pushed it during day and night and see no difference in anything as well.

When you push the button, a little green light will come on, indicating that the auto-dimming feature is active for the rearview mirror. It has a sensor inside the mirror so that when the headlights hit it, the mirror will dim itself so as to not blind you. When the sensor does not sense a light source, it will return to normal operating mode.

I think it's for day and night driving. It doesn't seem like it does anything but I think at night it will somehow dim the lights behind you....I don't use it.

It lets you extend the mirror out in case you are towing something.
