My son is 14 months old, but I have extensive Child Development and Child Psychology experience, and was a daycare worker for several years.
The mistake that most parents make in this area is exactly what you're asking....Having two seperate bedtimes for school nights and weekends! Children need stability and a routine, and that routine doesn't need to be changed until they are old enough to cope with it. Children from birth to around 13 or 14 should go to bed at the same time each night, regardless of what day of the week it is. But the bedtime is not really the important part, the importance comes with the amount of time between bedtime and wake up time. You MUST give your children enough time to get the required amount of sleep!!
The following lists the amount of sleep each child needs, by age, in a 24 hour period.
1 week - 16 hours 30 minutes
1 month - 15 hours 30 minutes
3 months - 15 hours
6 months -14 hours 15 minutes
9 months -14 hours
12 months -13 hours 45 minutes
18 months - 13 hours 30 minutes
2 years - 13 hours
3 years - 12 hours
4 years - 11 hours 30 minutes
5 years - 11 hours
6 years - 10 hours 45 minutes
7 years -10 hours 30 minutes
8 years -10 hours 15 minutes
9 years -10 hours
10 years -9 hours 45 minutes
11 years -9 hours 30 minutes
12 years -9 hours 15 minutes
13 years -9 hours 15 minutes
14 years -9 hours
15 years -8 hours 45 minutes
16 years -8 hours 30 minutes
17 years and up - 8 hours 15 minutes
This means a 6 year old who needs to get up by 7:30 should be asleep by 8:45. You just need to make sure that your children are getting enough sleep for their age group! And remember that if you let them stay up later on the weekends, it will be harder to get them to go to sleep through the week.

My four year old goes to bed at 8 every night of the week. Until she was 3 her bedtime was 7pm. Children should not have different bedtimes for different nights, this completely screws up their sleep schedule and could cause serious sleep issues as they get older. Now I'm not saying we never have late nights, but they are few and far between and only for special occasions or extenuating circumstances. There are so many kids, young kids, with sleep problems and attention deficit problems, and the most likely cause is that their parents did not protect their sleep when they were really young and start healthy sleep habits early in life. Now they are so overtired and exhausted we have to medicate them, with a stimulant drug by the way, to help them focus in school. I know there are kids out there that truly benefit from medication and I am not anti-meds, I just hope people realize it possibly could have been prevented. Earlier bedtimes could solve a lot of issues for young kids.

i have 3 kids, a 10 year old, a 7 year old and a 4 year old...they all go to bed around 8 p.m. on school night and then about 9 on the weekends, unless they are acting up then i still make them go to bed around 8. In my opinion, a child needs their rest and i know for a fact that my kids are not SLEEPING at 8 or even 8:30, but i do make them go to their rooms and lay down for bed with all lights out and quiet. Night time is MY time to spend trying to relax from a hard day, and then it's up at the crack of dawn to do it all over again. I've been told by some that 8 is too early a bedtime, but hey, it works for us and I'll keep doing it as long as i see fit. I also must add that by having them in bed by this time i NEVER have problems with them getting up in the morning and they always get up in pretty good moods...so it MUST be working.

Children do need to have a set bedtime.
Until they are in their teens, they should go to bed at the same time every night so that they get in the habit ans "staying up" is a treat.
You have to give teens a bit more flexiblity, but on school nights, I think they should be in bed before 11:00 PM
Under five: 7:00 or 7:30
6-9 year-olds: 8:00 - 8:30
10-13 year-olds: 9:00 - 10:00
Children need their sleep and parents need their own time to relax.

During the weeknights his bedtime is no later then 9.30pm. Some nights he is very tired so asks to go to bed early.
During the weekend and school holidays I dont give him a bedtime.. He thinks that he is so grown up because in his mind he will be able to stay up all night.... But he falls asleep no later then 10 pm.

My kids 6 and 8 wake up at 6:00 every morning and have to be at their bus stop by 7:15. Since 9 hours of sleep is needed at their age we make them get ready for bed at 8:00 and be in bed lights out no later than 8:45 on school nights. On weekends and holidays no later than 10 pm. Its important for them to get the rest they need and also important for the mom and dad to have time to themselves. I think to many houses are too child centered and the marriage suffers for it.
