I get seriously nervous:my face stiffens, my heart races, and I cannot speak aloud. It gets way worse around boys I like. I try breathing exercises, but they don't seem to work. How can I deal with this without medication? I'm a teenager.

You most likely have a very common condition called Social Anxiety Disorder. Its is treated through counseling and newer medications such as Paxil and Effexor-XR which are both safe and effective anti-depressants. I have had this my whole life. I force myself to go to social events and I have a very extroverted Friend as my "wind man". Someone who can keep conversations going and be there if I get uptight. Try not to consume alcohol to help this. Medication may really help though. Stay as active as possible, get lots of exercise and do not isolate. Pick jobs where you have to be extroverted. For instance, believe it or not, I am a therapist. It forces to me talk and be social. Lots of people have this, you are not alone. Contact me if you need more information

It sounds like you are having a anxiety attack, for real... to solve this without meds is something you'll have to do by trial and error... when it gets bad excuse yourself for a minute... go to the restroom... find ways to take breaks from the situation... say you need to go to the car for a second??/ do you get what I'm saying... taking these small breaks should help you regroup and get your butt out there... another thing is don't do anything different or weird from what you normally do with your hair and makeup, etc... make sure you are comfortable in what you have on... trying new look with your hair or clothes can cause more stress to fact whether others aprove... hope this helps...

Check out www.hufa.org - the symptoms list. It may be you have low blood sugar, and this may make your adrenaline trip off when you are in situations you have felt uncomfortable in in the past.

If this appears likely, then eating a snack that helps balance your blood sugar, about 30 minutes before you are to meet your friends may help. Remember, some people are very appreciative of a good listener, that does not speak much.

Also, consider taking training in public speaking (like Toastmasters). If you gain confidence with public speaking at your young age, it will help you throughout your entire life.

I would suggest seeing your DR and maybe getting some medicine to help you face others. College is going to be a real challenge for you if this is the case.

Real and astonishing calm comes from being ready and willing, without shame, to do whatever comes naturally in all circumstances.

The unbelievable result is that you're far more sociable.

I know exactly how you feel. I've learned that I have to be comfortable with myself. It's ok not to dress like everyone else. It's ok to be alittle quirky. It's about self esteem. You have as much to offer as the next person. You are who you are & you don't have to be like anybody but you. If they aren't cool with that, move on.

Try to keep the focus on them by asking them questions, or complimenting them on their clothing, etc. If you know them well, compliment them on a positive aspect of their personality. We all goof sometimes, so don't take yourself too seriously.
