I have a neighbor who's school age child does not get home from daycare until 8:00 pm at night. So the child is away from home from 7:30 am to 8:00 pm. I was wondering what others do?

I have been a licensed daycare provider in my home for 20 years. Each daycare home sets its own hours. Mine are 6:30 AM - 5:30 PM. Once I did watch a little girl whose parents were both police officers. I made an exception for their family and she was often dropped off at 3:00 PM and picked up at midnight. I also had another family whose children came at 6 AM and stayed until 6 PM because of the distance both parents had to drive to work. Perhaps your neighbor's child is not at daycare all that time but goes to extra-curricular activities such as soccer, piano lessons, Karate, etc. after being picked up at daycare. I know a number of families who have their children in an activity every day of the week. I'd be exhausted, as would be my kids if we were gone every night of the week.

Let's see, I'm a single mom and I work from 8 to 4 pm, plus an hour at the gym (when I'm that motivated!). So my daughter is at daycare/school/daycare combo from 7:20am until around 5:30, 5:45 pm when I go to the gym, or 4:30, 4:45 pm when I just go right home. Not too terrible!

That's an awful long time to be away from home. At our daycare the policy is the children should have no longer than 9 and half hours in daycare,. That allows parents time to drive to and from daycare to work. We allow for certain circumstances when the child may have to be there later, but if we see the child is always having long days, we talk to the parents about it. What irritates the hell out of me is when parents do there shopping,. or go for coffee, or go home and make supper before picking up their kids. It's so not fair to the child.

It just depends on the requirements of the family really. Most children are in daycare for about an hour longer than their parents are at work, due to needing time to get from daycare to work, and then work to daycare. Say the parent works from 8-5, the child would need care from about 7:30-5:30. If a parent is working 12 hour shifts, say 7am-7pm, the child will probably need care from about 6:30am-7:30pm. It really isn't odd, especially if you're talking about a single parent.

These days my daughter has no daycare. My mother cares for her in our home. However, I used to work from 9a till 11 or so at night every single day. I would take her to school (first grade) then she would ride the bus to the babysitters and be asleep when I would pick her up. Her behaviors were outrageous for years. It has taken a few years but she is much better. I did what I had to do at the time to support us. It lasted 2 years. I'm so glad it is over.
Parents do what they have to do to survive. It is sad that it is the kids who suffer the most for it.
