I agreed to help host a birthday party for my cousin who will be turning 3. What are some fun games and activities for them to participate in? The kids will range in age from 16 months to 3 1/2 years old.

My three year old loves making papers. Whether he's at school, church, playing on his own, or whatever, coloring or doing paper crafts just thrill him (and he gets VERY protective of his "papers", too). Along those lines, a coloring contest might be kind of fun.

Depending on what the theme of the birthday party is, there are different crafts you could have them do. My cousin always had a costume party (his birthday was October 30), and we had costume contests and would make masks out of things like paper sacks, paper plates, construction paper, feathers, and all kinds of things. If you have, say, a Care Bears party, you can use paper plates and make kind of templates for masks, then let them color their mask to be their favorite Care Bear (a template for the mask could be as easy as half a paper plate with eyeholes, two small circles up there for the ears, and a band of some sort to go around their heads. At that young an age, they don't really require a lot of detail or perfection.)

Spongebob Squarepants or Finding Nemo party? Having a "fishing" game is easy, too, just make an "ocean" board or large paper using the great big rolls of paper, then give the kids sticks with strings attached to them to go fishing. An adult on the other side, of course, could tie a corrosponding toy (for example, a little plastic fish to play with at bathtime for a Nemo party), or a small treat.

My friend's son had a scarecrow party (he and his friends dressed like scarecrows, he's got an autumn birthday), and we played Freeze Dance to "If I Only Had a Brain".

At that age, simple contests (where everyone is some sort of winner), games, and crafts that most slightly older kids would find lame just thrill kids that small.

Have fun. :-)

Other than these ideas, you can Google ideas and come up with some really terrific ones. There are some VERY creative people (more than I am, that's for sure) out there, and there are lots and lots of websites specifically for this sort of thing.

Try face painting, its not that hard when they are small, they love everything you paint. If you have a tractor or even a riding mower and a small trailer you could do a hay ride. Get a pullstring pinata. Have a bean bag toss with colorful holes on some bright card board with a fun prize for everyone who tries. Check out renting a pony. Maybe some sack races. They are so small that the race doesn't happen, but its fun to watch. Also, check into renting a bounce house. My sons 3rd b-day party was today and we had all of these things and more and they had a blast! We had it at a local farm and they road 2 different shetlin ponies, a hackney pony, and a quarter horse. Also, depending upon what time of year it is, you could always purchase some small pumpkins with some fun stickers or finger paint and let them decorate pumpkins. It doesn't have to be before Halloween, just as long as the pumpkins are in season, the kids won't care. Have fun. Need anymore ideas feel free to e-mail me. clb_tucker is my e-mail addy on yahoo.

Use the classics.

Pin the tail on the donkey can be modified to suit their interests, (pin the backpack on Dora, etc.) but use tape instead of pins.

Fishing: You can make a small fishing pole and attach a magnet where the hook goes. Cut out paper fish and attach metal paper clips to them. Put the fish in a baby sized swimming pool or large pail. There are also small plastic sets available at toy stores.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

As the children range in age the best thing to do is take them outside and let them play. If the weather is bad just have a few simple toys around and let them play. If you want a more structured activity try hand painting, cookie baking/cake decorating, bird feeder making, playdoh.etc.

One game that I've learned that kids love is blwoing a balloon for each kid and tying a string to it. Now tie the string around their ankle and they run around and try to step on each other's balloons to pop. The last one with their balloon wins a prize.

you can always take them to an indoor playground. mite be more expensive, but its only once a year. cuz of ages, the other childrens parent/s ofcourse would have to come as well. you probably gotta feed the grown ups too, but like i said earlier, only once a year.
