Call your local VFW or American Legion post or VA hospital or ask at a senior center or nursing home. There are many vets who would love a visit even without pie.

Whatever you decide, do it quickly!

World War ll was over in 1945, so if someone were 18 at that time they are 79 now. Go to a veteran's home. Don't worry about what you take with you, as I am sure they will be glad just to have someone to visit with. What you may take home with you is a greater understanding of history and patriotism. Many years ago my uncle was in a veteran's hospital, and when my family would go to visit him I sometimes talked with an old man who was a WW1 vet. After a while the old man would be looking for me when we came to visit. I was just a little kid but he amazed and mesmerised me with his stories. He never had anyone there when I was visiting, so I may have been the only outside person he talked with.

This generation of Veterans (WWII) is, sadly, passing on at an ever increasing rate -- because they average late 80s, 90s and even older right now.

For the most part -- talk to your local Veteran's Centers or organizations -- and you can find out their efforts to provide visitors and volunteers for veterans' needs for ALL conflicts -- not just the WWII generation. This can include visits to the local VA hospitals/nursing homes, care of veteran's cemetaries, recognitions or efforts for current servicemembers stationed long ways from home, etc.

Go to any VA hospital and talk to the social work department or the volunteer coordinator. The thing you could do that would please most vets the most would be to talk to them. The WWII vets are getting old and many of them are lonely.

This makes me so happy to see! I know they would love just a visit. Both of my grandfathers fought in WWII and I'd give just about anything to have the chance to thank them for what they did for us and to let them know that I admire them.

Don't forget the other vets too! They all deserve our thanks and admiration.
