I'd go with 30-06 because brass is so easy to come by and I reload.

Nothing wrong with 308 either. What's your intended usage?

The Remington 700 is a fantastic choice for a rifle, as far as caliber, there isn't much difference between the two. The both use the same bullet, the .308 is a shorter case, the 30-06 can be loaded with heavier bullets. For general target shooting and an occasional deer hunt, I'd go with the .308, you'll have less recoil and surplus ammo is cheaper and easier to find.

I would go for the 308 myself but the best thing would be to try to get an opportunity to fire both and see which one likes you best. If you go to a large range most folks will let you try a shot or two if you tell them you are trying to decide what to buy. The polite thing is to offer to pay for a few rounds but most people will turn you down.

Wow; tough choice. Both are excellent all-around cartridges.

I think I would go with the .308; that way you can use one gun for all of your needs, even heavy Alaskan game.
