Here's a definition of religion from dictionary.com:

6. something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience:
ex. - to make a religion of fighting prejudice.

Christianity meets this definintion because it has set ideas (trinity, etc.) and its own ethical codes.

Atheism has set ides (no God, etc.) and its own ethical code. However, Atheism's ethical code is not just a list of laws in a book. Rather, it's the idea that people know what's good and bad without having to be told by clergy. (We all know that killing is bad, but some things like not going to church, which Christians consider immoral, is not immoral to Atheists.)

Atheism could be defined as the absence of belief in God as the Creator of the universe. Atheists trace back the origin of the world o some weird biological event

Nobody can tell exactly what is religion, except the Messengers of God, Who are true Founders of religion.
In the Adamic Cycle (6000 years), there are not more than nine divine Revelations, while in the world there are thousands of organizations claimed to be religions. So we should study the Holy Books to find out precise definition of all concepts.

Actually, it was the 7th US Appellate Court that coined that phrase, when one of the judges wrote in his opinion that atheism was a religion. This was an issue about an inmate's rights.

The nice thing for atheists is that they cannot be discriminated against because of their "religious" beliefs.

It doesn't. Atheism is simply the absence of theism, or believing in gods. That's it. No matter how many times a theist says atheism is a religion, it isn't.

And assinine statements like "where does it say it isn't?" notwithstanding, it still isn't a religion.

No the word atheism simply means or denotes an absence or lack of belief in God. Perhaps some people find the word belief to be misleading.

according to dictionary.com

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=atheism

1. the doctrine or belief that there is no God.
2. disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings.

Doesn't the words 'doctrine' or 'belief' denote religion?

It's in the Zoological Dictionary. If one is an atheist they can find all their relatives in the zoo.
