people who are plagued by mental distress are often poked at by folks who have no point of reference for the discomfort

when folks come to me with that issue, I suggest to them having their family member or friend go to a NAMI meeting to get some psychoeducation

think of it perhaps in light of cultural differences... we often giggle at or dismiss customs or rituals we don't know about...

when people understand your pain, they can be more sympathetic

on the other hand, there are those that would react that way no matter what... those folks I usually stay away from... they don't care enough about me to put the effort into understanding so I dismiss them ... their loss

YES >>> people who don't know what its like to be depressed have no idea !!! I've been on anti depressants for many years and meds for anxiety. I've had family members and co-workers make comments like" have you taken your happy pills today?" when i may have been in a bad mood or feeling down. My ex husband used to rag on me for taking them and guess what??? after a illness he is now on a antidepressant>>> moral to that story be care full what you say

Yeah,my family used it against me in every argument growing up. I didn't talk to them for a year and it cleared it all up. It helped them relies that I didn't need them in my life and I could do better on my own. So now they treat my presents as a treat rather then an inconvenece. I would not recomend running away from your family just making your own space away from them.

Yes, some have pooh-poohed the idea of my emotional problems or criticized them, passed them off as rationalizing or trying to avoid responibility for my actions, etc. I'm glad I have a compassionate and considerate counselor who I can rely on for help and support. I have to try and keep away from negative people and seek out the positives..

Yes, but not anymore. I don't allow people like that in my life. I am fortunate that my family is involved in my mental illness and my recovery. But, I do know of friends who's family tells them to get over it. That makes me mad. I don't care for ignorant people.

yes..my husband says that mental problems are not health problems. He thinks that you should be able to fix them your self. Of course he criticizes me for not being "mentally strong" but I just tell him that there is a reason that he is not a doctor.....

Some of my family members did so when I was young. But I grew out of it.

Yes! and I think family is worse than anybody! It will come back on them someday! Maybe one of these days one of them will get sick in some other sort of way and I'll just make fun of them for that huh?

never because in buddhism we believe that that if you do make fun of a mentaly unstable person you will be mentally unstable later on in your life or throughout your next life. Plus I don't find it to be very nice at all only sick people would do such a thing.

i don't think i would call it making fun..they say that i am crazy but that is a given. i am not like all the rest..i am crazy but i am not stupid. unique. the space outside the box they all want to be in. i really think they are kinda proud of it. some times they tell me that maybe i need to be on meds...some times i think they are right...it might make it easier to be normal and boring like all the rest...
