Bound's hubby here:
Presuming you are located in the US, the .303 British in a SMLE is not your best choice for a competition rifle, for several reasons.
First, the stock is not a 1 piece stock, so you can not bed the action well. Second, the SMLE does not have a windage adjustable rear sight. Third, the .303 British does not lend itself well to competition accuracy out to the typical 600 yard ranges.
If you are in the US, you can get into competition quite easily with a military style rifle, with either the M1903 Springfield or the M1 Garand, which can be purchased through the Civilian Marksmanship Program for about $450 (see link, below). Either rifle can be competitive out of the box, and can be made more competitive with just a little work.
The only matches you will typically see the .303 British in a SMLE in the US, will be in the Classic/Foreign Service Rifle category of the Springfield matches.
Good luck!

Not my first choice......
The Enfield has always had the reputation as a great combat rifle rather than a rifle range rifle. The same thing can be said about the AK vs the M16. The M16 is better on the target range. The Ak-47 is for war. The stock needs to be glass beaded and the sights could be better. The Mauser like my Swedish model M38 is a more accurate choice. You can use a .303, you just have to work a little harder to compete with it.

a british enfield i a great shooting rifle and espically after you put the fiberforce stock on. but your best bet for a comp rifle would be a bolt action 308. and you can find one fairly reasonable at any pawn shop.
