Will they let me carry pepper spray? I thought about telling the guards that I am alone and figured they might keep a closer eye out or something...what do you think?

I am a young woman that often travels alone and the best advice I can give is to keep your guard up. Though all of my travels have been within the states and never on a train. Be aware of everyone around you and if you start to feel uncomfortable find somewhere safe and public.

I'm not sure about the pepper spray, but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to ask. Beware of pickpockets and thieves. Keep your cash and passport in a moneybelt close to your body instead of carrying a purse. Don't walk alone at night, or if you absolutely must, pick areas that are well-lit. Lock your bag on the trains, and don't sleep on a train with any valuables near you. They'll be stolen before you wake.

Don't carry a pocket book or purse in public. Watch out for kidnappers in Europe, because they'll steal you if they can and make you work in the sex trade. Carry pepper spray. Don't walk around in miniskirts or high heels, wear sneakers and get ready to run. If they try to take you, fight dirty, kick, spit, gorge eyes out, and grow your nails long so you can use them as weapons. Wear your hair in a bun so if try to violate you they can't grab you and drag you by the hair. If a van or car pulls up to you, start running.
