I know it must be for safety, but HOW is it more safe?

The idea is to keep your access to the aisle as clear and unobstructed as possible in case there's an emergency evacuation. It's that simple.

In the event of a sudden crash landing, assuming you were rebellious enough not to have your seatbelt on, you'll simply smack into the back of the other guy's chair, rather than whack the edge of your chin into the top corner of the chair in front of you and break your neck.

It would actually be much safer if chairs were facing backwards, obviously, as they do in the military, but well.

So everyone can have a good view should the plane not make it.....They will want you to tell them everything you saw. You might consider taking notes if you have a short memory.....then again, maybe a short memory is all you'll need.

Because the flight attendants say so. If the airplane crashes, I don't think it will matter what position your seat back is in.
