In this area Verizon is the one that sucks. I had verizon and I had to stand out in the street to get a signal. I switched to Cingular and it is fantastic! I guess you need to narrow your question down to a specific area of the country.

Get the coverage area maps from your local providers then you can see who has the best coverage therefore giving you the best connections. Also ask if they own their cell towers, because if they are sharing with another company then you calls have to contend with their customers as well...
