If you want a natural remedy, try some organic honey - it contains natural antiseptics and children often appreciate the sweet taste.

Secondly, take your child to the doctor - the above remedy is only for the interim. You need to find out what is causing the sore throat - it may be a problem associated with his/her ears such as glue ear (especially if it is a recurrent illness)

Don't give your child icecream to try and numb the area - this is an old wives tale - it is much better to have them eat something that will actually "scratch" at the tonsils - crusty bread for example, as it will slough away at the infection.

Try gurgling salt water every couple of hours. Does not taste the best, but it will help with the pain and sometimes clear up the problem. If they are not better by Monday then visit the doc.

I use Chloraseptic spray. My doctor said it was safe and they think they are big boys. My sons are 6,5,and 3. If you don't think the spray will work try crushing up the losenges into smaller pieces.
