Why can’t Americans eat with knife and fork? It’s so stupid to make eating more difficult. They push the food foolishly on the plate. Can anybody eat with knife and fork or can only European and American millionaires do that?

I'm Scottish and I sometime eat with my fingers. It depends on what I'm eating. I'd say it would be pretty much the same. No one over here would ever eat Mc D's with a knife & fork. I something eat pizza with a knife and fork but only so it doesn't stick to the roof of my mouth when I bite it. I really don;t think there much of a dirrerence, People in the US don;t eat baked beans with the hands, do they?

Good question. In the beginning, we all ate with our hands, quickly, sloppily, to get full before the food was gone. Later, we all had a knife to cut the item into smaller pieces, but we still ate with our hands. I believe it was Catherine DI Medici came to France and brought us the fork and it soon became de riguer to use both knife and fork. Some kids raised by Brit moms in the US learned to eat European style...I still cut up a sandwich. I'd like to see more kids have better table manners., I blame MacDonalds.

I was taught "European" style as a child but I can also eat "Amercian" style too. So I can speak from experience..........IF I want to eat slow, such as at a social event, I will eat "American." The pushing around, changing hands slows things down. If I'm not trying to eat slow.........that is most other times I eat European. I taught my husband and now he does too. I'm amazed when people comment, it's natural to me.

PS, not a millionaire!!! Not by any means.

I know very few Americans that don't use a knife and fork, and those that don't tend to be infants and toddlers....
why such a presumptuous accusation towards a whole country are you prejudice? I have met more Americans with good manners than bad. Maybe its the social circle you are in....

Hello Kay,

The United States of America is a free country.

Everybody in the United States of America is free to eat their food in the style they feel comfortable doing so.

Nobody in the United States will get arrested and thrown in prison for refusing to eat with a knife and fork.

Good Luck !!

In my family it was taught to us as children, as were most other manners-related ticks I have. I think it's just how your family brings you up. I am a member of the military living in Europe and have noticed that many more people here do use them than back home. But then again, eating here is usually much more relaxed than in the states.

Well, it's not strictly an American thing, but I've always wondered why people eat that way, too... switching hands just slows everything down and is way harder to eat with! I think some people just find it too difficult to eat with their left hands, so they switch. I find continental style much easier, however, and a lot neater, too!

I eat with a knife and fork.

And I'm not a millionaire. Why can't people eat with a knife and fork? And why can't they not?

It really depends, don't you think?
