The standard treatment for Hepatitis C is pegylated interferon (shots) with ribavirin (pills). The shot is given once a week and the pills are taken daily. Depending on your genotype, treatment is usually given for 48 weeks. It is a mild form of chemotherapy and is effective 50-80% of the time, depending on which genotype of Hep C you have. Genotype 1 is the most common in the US, and requires 48 weeks of treatment, although your doctor may want to tailor your treatment based on your individual needs. Genotype 2 requires 24 weeks, as it responds to the medication better, and geno 3 is either 24 or 48 weeks. Some people with geno 3 are doing treatment for the 48 weeks because it has been shown over the last few years that they are relapsing after only 24 weeks; so that is up to your doctor.
I have done the treatment 6 years ago and was fortunate enough to have been a sustained responser; I am now clear of the virus and feel much better. I would suggest to you that you beware of alternatives in this case because they don't have the research proving their effectiveness. While some alternatives lower liver enzyme levels, they do not eradicate the disease and damage to the liver still occurs even when liver enzymes are low. Research has shown that the younger someone is when they start treatment, the better their chances of responding are. Also, the lower the viral load, the better chance of clearing the virus. Why gamble and wait till the liver is severely damaged?
Some other important things to know:
Don't drink alcohol; it expedites damage to the liver.
Get vaccinated against Hep A and B in order to protect your liver from further attack. If you show the antibodies to A & B, you won't need the vaccine.
One other thing I would suggest, get in touch with a support group. While online groups are nice to keep in touch with others, a face to face group really helps you to learn from other's experiences and to feel a sense of belonging and support. Best wishes to you whatever you do.
