I'm a "beginner" and I would like to buy some flavorful cigars. If anyone can recommend any flavored cigars, like the kaluahs or something of that matter, i'd appreciate that as well. I did have a rum flavored cigar at one time, it was great, too. Also, if you can recommend a brandy or whiskey that goes along with it, I'd be most gratefull.

I have been a cigar smoker for 22 years. Even though I find a flavored cigar to be enjoyable from time to time, most of them are not so great. The best cigars I have are the regular kind. Always look for fresh hand-made cigars kept in Humidors in a local cigar shop. The drug store variety are not hand made, have "shake" tobacco in them rather than Long Fill, are machine made, have paper wrappers and have preservatives in them to keep them moist outside a humid environment.

2 names of mild Dominican cigars but of high quality are Macanudo and Ashton. depending on the size they are from $5-$12 per cigar. A less expensive excellent cigar is Padron. It's from Nicaragua and is amazing, but it's a little more full flavored (not harsh mind you) just more powerful. is something to graduate to later on after you develop more of a taste for cigars.

Any Brandy, Whiskey or Port Wine is better than neutral spirits such as Vodka or Rum or Gin which don't go with cigars as well.

Good Luck.

For a flavorful cigar that's not over-the-top, I would recommend El Rey del Mundo. They're modestly priced (five or six bucks) and offer a lot of flavor without any bitter tar taste that some of the stronger cigars can develop.

For a flavored cigar, you need a Java cigar by Drew Estate, HANDS DOWN. These are delicious! They have a chocolatey/coffee flavor that is similar to the Kaluah cigars but much better, and much longer lasting. The tobacco in them is also top notch, which is something that is often overlooked in flavored cigars. Plus, they smell great--even people who don't like cigar smoke won't mind them. Again, they'll cost you about five bucks.

As for beverages with a cigar, I don't recommend liquors too highly. When you smoke a cigar you can develop what is called "tongue bite," which is a tingly sensation on the tongue. It becomes a very spicy/burning sensation when you drink anything that is very cold, carbonated, or contains a lot of acohol. This can make liquors very unpleasant to drink--you would be better off with a cigar flavored with a liquor like rum or cognac.

If I am drinking with my cigar, I usually will drink room-temperature water, which cleanses my mouth and lets me taste the cigar more fully, or I enjoy a cup of strong coffee or espresso. I especially like how the espresso blends with the flavors of the cigar.
