my son had the same problem and the only way my health visitor could explain it was that my son didn`t want to let go. because he felt that this was something that had to happen in side his nappy, has crazy has it sounds he didn`t want to let go, he would hide behind the sofa and do his business or he would go all day with out a number too and wait for a nappy to go on before he would do his business. praise him give him love he will come round to the idea of doing a number two`s on the toilet/potty. my son hasn`t done them in his nappy for ages although i am trying to get him toilet trained during the night it is hard but it will come in the end good luck.

We always had special potty books in the bathroom about toliet training. Our favorite was "Everyone Poops", but there was an Elmo one and some other character. Sometimes they get a little preachy!
The point is you only read those books in the potty. On the potty. When you get off, the book is over. On the flip side, when the book is over, you get off. No sense in staying on the potty for hours.
Be sure you are timing the potty stops well. When does he usually poop? We usually did a potty stop right after breakfast. If there's no poo, it's OK to try again a half hour later or so. If he poos in his diapers, comment on it, but don't make it a big deal. But if he poos in the potty, you know it's celebration time, and it should be like the biggest potty party (-:.
I don't know about M&Ms -- I've heard it works, but eating while defacating doesn't seem right to me. But, maybe as a third or fourth resort.

To help your child learn to poop on the potty, you should first make sure that he isn't constipated. If he has bowel movements that are sometimes big, hard and painful to pass, then he may just be afraid to use the potty to have his BMs. Increasing the amount of fluid and fiber in her diet, and perhaps using a stool softener, can help make her bowel movements softer and easier to pass if this is a problem.
If constipation isn't a problem, or if it is and you have fixed it, then the following tips may help to get her to have regular bowel movements on the potty:
Encourage him to have his bowel movements in the bathroom, even if that means having him sit in the corner of the bathroom Once he gets used to that, then have him sit on the potty when he has to go.
Read children's story books about potty training to him, such as Everyone Poops or The Princess and the Potty, to help get him used to the idea of pooping in the potty.
Offer lots of praise when he does make some progress.
If he is resistant to all of these methods let him go where he wants. Let him know each time that he should tell you when he is ready to start going in the bathroom or on the potty.
Most importantly, don't shame or punish him for not having bowel movements on the potty.
And remember that 3 isn't a magic age where everyone is potty trained. Many children aren't fully potty trained until they are 3 1/2 or 4 years old.

My niece used to ask for a nappy to be put on for poohs until she was about 4. You can't make a child do a pooh on the potty and if you try to force it, they will just hold it in. This can cause all sorts of problems including compacted bowels. You can try and encourage him to do it on the potty with reward charts and treats, but in the end it is up to him when he is confident enough to do it. maybe if you put him on the potty and ask him if he would like you to go away, my son never wanted me to stay around when he did a pooh, still doesn't.

Then take your eldest out to purchase new underclothes, and allow your eldest settle on upon some- possibly with well-known television man or woman or some element. enable your youngest see what he's lacking. purchase a training e book and skim about how the finished "significant boys" like to positioned on underclothes now they are literally no longer children anymore. Get the idea that it is wisely to no longer be in nappies anymore. Then in some weeks verify out once extra. i wager he will do it next time.

I was talking to my best friend on the hpone the other night about potty-training and she had her daughter trained in 3 days by bribing her with M&M's. Not usually a good idea to bribe a child to do something, but beats having them in diapers until they are 4-5 years-old.
