Your problem seems to be that you least the apartment instead of leased it. Try doing it over again, and after you've leased it, the roaches should head for the hills.

This is definitely the manager's responsibility. If you have "mainenance request" forms fill one out immediately and give it to the manager. Keep a copy for yourself. If you don't have any such form, put your complaint in writing. Be sure to date it and make a copy for your records. Document everything never take anything for granted i.e. a verbal promise by your landlord to"take care of it." Try to get a comittment from the manager as to when it will be done. Not only will you need this information in case the manager doesn't follow through, but you yourself will need to know when to expect the exterminators so you can be sure to have food put away etc. One landlord wanted me to put everything, and I do mean everything in a big pile in the living room! Supposedly this was so they could spray allo the closets and shelving. This was one big hassle. Remember that they will be spraying poison, and that will affect you as well as the rtoaches! If you can get them to pay for a motel room overnight--that would be great. If you can stay at a friends place while you let the place "air out" this would be wise. It's not that it would kill you, you just don't want toxins, especially pesticides, many of which are carcinogenic to accumulate in your body. After the sprayers are through I would suggest wearing rubber gloves and wiping down all surfaces where you might be preparing food..
Keep a log, diary whatever of when you contacted the manager and what was said. If you don't get immediate action (within 2 or 3 days, I would phone the Health Department and explain the situation. Even though cckroaches are a very common problem and hard to get rid of even with spraying--the owner of that property probably does not want it to get out that his or her properties are roach infested, or that he or she has been contacted by the health department. Cockroaches are a health hazard and spread disease. You have a right to an apartment free from them. You are in the right.

Hello Gary, It depends. If the coch roaches are brown in color then they are the easiest to get rid of (these are water roaches which normally come from people having left over food down the kitchen sink). Go to Lowes Home Improvement and purchase the "Bomb" cans. 1 for each room. Pour Clorox down each sink (including the bath tub and any drains in the cellar/basement). After you have done the clorox, then start with the farthest room (make sure all windows are closed) start one can at a time (placing can "bomb" in center of each room). Until you have reached the last room which should be by the door so you can exit after setting off the can "bomb". Now if the coch roaches are black then they are the worst and also the hardest to get rid of and that is when you want to call (seriously) the orkin company for treatment or the spectracide company for treatment. If you do not have either of those companies in your area then just look in the yellow page under pesticides or cochroach. Good Luck.

Since you are a renter, your landlord has to take action. Contact him/her and tell them. If you want to do something on your own you can go to a Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, etc. and pick up some pesticide to use on your own. If you are planning to leave town in the near future you can set off a bug bomb. Be careful though. Be sure to get a good quality bomb, make sure all eating utensils are in sealed container(or wash them after setting off bomb) and make sure noone or thing is in the house during or at least 12 hours after setting off the bomb.

Since you have signed a lease you need to study the terms of the agreement. I would call the landlord and tell him to get rid of the bugs or let me out of the lease. If he refuses to do either then contact your local health department.

Call the leasing office and tell them. They should take care of it immediately. Not only are they obligated to remedy the problem, they don't want it spreading to other apartments.

Be short and sweet about it. They'll know what to do.

I would go to the person or person's responsible for renting me the apartment, and tell them you want something done about it because they can call a pest-control person out to do the job. No money should come out of your pocket! If they refused to do it, then you call the Health Department and I bet they will change their tune.....Fight fire with fire!
