How long would I have to take a probiotic eg acidophilus to recolonise the gut?

And is it possible to take too much or for too long?

Non GI specialist doctors don't seem to know much about probiotics.

Acidophiles is excellent choice. Don't have to worry about taking it too long, can continue to take one or two tablets/capsules per day. Acidophiles contains only good bacteria, but I would say after about 6 weeks of acidophiles following antibiotic therapy would be sufficient to stop taking. Also yogurt with live cultures is natural, nutritional way of getting live good bacteria, along with buttermilk. Thanks for the opportunity to address your question.

My doctor told me to eat 2-3 cups of yogurt a day after I had a major antibiotic dosing. I had an 'infection of unknown origin' that caused my legs to swell and turn bright red, and my temp was 108, and the dose of antibiotics they gave me both in IV drip and in pills was about 3x the normal, and of COURSE I had stomach trouble, like for a month! I had to take the pills for over 3 weeks after I got out of the hospital, and yogurt was his idea of fixing it. I have to say, once I was out of antibiotics and was eating yogurt, it took only about 3 days for my stomach to settle down.
