My cat has gone missing, only for a day and a half, which is unusual, but he is quite an explorer. A neighbour saw a cat being hit by a car nearby, and although he can't say it was my Odin it's quite a coincidence and I fear the worst.

Apparently both wheels of the car ran over the cat, but he got up and kept running into the school ground next to my home. I've been searching for him with no luck so far.

My question is whether a cat could survive trauma like that for long? I'm surprised he could get up and run at all and distressed to think he suffered so much alone. I also wonder what a cat's instincts would tell it to do? I'd like to think he'd have tried to get home (not far) if he could, but I've heard cats will hide when ill or injured.

It's been a day and a half so if it was him I hope he's not still out there alive, in pain and distress. I have to bring my baby home regardless, so I'd be grateful for any tips on what he might have done in the time he had left.

I'm so so sorry, you sound like you've been through a lot.

A similar thing happened with my cat too. We had a knock on the door and we answered to a woman who just said she'd seen a cat get hit by a car. She said she stopped and went to see if it was ok, and she said it was lying in the middle of the road. When she got near, she said it woke up and ran off, much like you cat. She gave us a collar and sure enough, it was our cat's.

We called and called for him all day, and waited up till midnight, but still no sign. Finally, as I was going to bed, I heard meowing by the door and it was him. He was bleeding from the nose and in a very sorry state but he was alive and later fully recovered.

So yes, cats do hide when injured, and will not come to you when you call. and yeah, our cat must've had a fair hit to be bleeding out of his nose.

From my experience, a cat's body tells them to hide until they can muster up the strength to try and get home.

It seems like it will be 50/50 whether he will make it home or not. believe me, he won't suffer. Cats sleep to recover and he will have found a nice warm safe place to sleep. If he died, he died in his sleep, if he's still alive, he's sleeping and trying to recover, so he wont be in pain.

My advice? Keep calling him, keep watching for him for now. He won't come home until he's good and ready, but its nice if he hears you calling, it might encourage him. Leave food out and somewhere like a cat flap, or a box so that if he does come home, and you're not there, he has something to eat and somewhere to sleep.

I wish you and him the best of luck. I know only too well what you are going through, I'm so sorry. A day and a half is still a short time.

Cat Hit By Car

It would one depend on where he was hit. If it was your cat I would fear that he was able to get himself off the road and is probably either liking his wounds or worse. Is there an chance a wild animal may have taken advantage of the situation?

Most cats will hide when injured and they most often as hard as this is going to sound will wonder off when dying. I hope this is not the case and I wish you luck in finding him. Could someone by chance have taken him in seeing he was injured? Could someone have taken him in regardless?

If he was seen running to the school ground I would start there. Running is a good sign that he was not injured too seriously. I would look around there and look under things sometimes school yards have play equipment like tunnels and stuff that an animal in distress might take shelter in. I really wish you the best of luck!

a cat can survive a near car passing if its between the car's wheels or to the side of them. he would probably be looking for u, unless he hates u.
