Are they dangerous? This depends more upon the driver's ability and your surroundings, but we realize most classics (1959-2000) lack airbags, a roll-cage, or most modern safety equipment required in USA. However, the new BMW MINI gets some of the highest safety ratings anywhere. There is a bad misconception with Americans that big cars are safe. I've seen a Cadillac Escalade go head to head with a Honda Civic. The Escalade suffered major damage, literally fell apart, the passengers suffered major trauma, while the Honda was able to drive away and the passengers were not as badly injured. MINIs do not get immediate police attention, but if you drive all crazy, even if you are driving an old beater of a Volvo, you will get attention. I have heard of people getting their MINI rims stolen, but wheel locks and Lo-Jack will stop you from worrying about it. That being said, though the MINI appeals to all different age groups, the car is not for everyone. The MINI is fun to drive and will turn lots of heads. If you don't like the attention, get something else. If you like it, get one (or two). There are other nice small cars, like the VW GTI, Mazda Miata MX-5, 350Z, Smart ForTwo, or Porsche Boxter. Like 'em alot. And I'm not usually fond of anything that doesn't have metal bumpers.
The original mini was very tiny, and, being British, unpredictable but lovable.
The new mini has less "heart and soul", but enough connection with the original that the inspiration is still intact.
It has the plus of having larger interior dimensions, thus a 6' 290 lb guy like me would fit. Well, does fit as I looked at one at a dealer one time, but never drove it.

cute little bug, but is just about as safe as a covered motor cycle. Get hit by a truck and you will see a bumper up close really fast.
