My cd drive on the laptop is not working so I have an external disc drive but when I try to durn a CD with itunes it only sees the internal disc drive not the new external drive. How can I change the preferences to make itunes see the external drive. It is on an Apple with system X

Not enough info. I will try to help even though I don't know the model of external drive, the model of the laptop, the version of iTunes or the exact version of the operating system. All these factors make a difference in what to do. iTunes is not compatible with all external drives but you have two options to try to get it to work:

actually.. have you installed the external disc drive/??
if yes.. actually.. idont' think you have to but just in case do it..
after that's all done.. open up i tunes.. click on itunes>>preferences>>
affter that click on advanced in the tabs.. once in that window.. click on burning.. there should be a choice that it gives you as in cd burner.. and click the external.. make sure it's already plugged-in and powered up.
