hereditary. alzheimers is not something you purely get from a lifestyle choice or from the environment. there is a genetic predisposition to it. if you truly want to do some research and learn about the disorder, i suggest going to the library and checking out "the 36 hour day." i cannot remember who wrote it right now, but it is very informative.
you can also check out this website:
also, look up dementia.
and, yes, lifestyle choices can play a part in it ((such as smoking) but it is not the smoking that creates the dementia - it's the physical repercussions of the smoking that lead to a chain of events to occur which ends in dementia/alzheimers.

alzheimers is the one disease that researchers really have no idea what causes it. If someone in your family has developed alzheimers then your chances of developing it are greater. there are many theories about what can cause it but they are only theories. One is that it could be brought on by a head injury another is it is caused by a defective gene. unfortunately it can only be determined that a person has the disease by doing an autopsy on the brain after the person dies. there are things that build up in a persons brain that a person with alzheimers brain cannot dispose of in a normal manner. this buildup causes the brain to not be able to function normally. The symptoms of the disease are the same as the symptoms of old age. dementia, memory loss, inability to recognize the signals the brain sends to tell us what our body needs and this makes it very difficult to tell what is normal in aging and what is alzheimers.

The reason for people getting Alzheimer's is not known. My mom has it.She is second stage right now.The only known medication that helps it slow down is called Aricept. It makes a huge difference. When she misses her doses it becomes very obvious.
you should look it up on the Internet.

heredity but I think lifestyle and environment play roles also. If you don't keep your mind stimulated, you may be at higher risk for getting it.
