Could be gum infection. Also could be an abscessed tooth, this frequently leads to swollen jaw. If this is the case, she should probably go to the emergency room. For dental abscesses can and do sometimes go to the brain. Now we have a built in protective mechanism, known as the "Blood Brain Barrier", however it lies at the base of the brain, just below the neck line. Therefore when infection occurs in our mouths and up ward, the blood brain barrier doesn't protect us. If your sister is running fever, having difficulty swallowing, or ANY RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS GET HER TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM IMMEDIATELY. Thanks for the opportunity to address your question.

You will never know for sure unless you go see someone who WOULD know, such as a dentist. Or, since it is Saturday afternoon, she may need to go to the emergency room. It could be a gum infection, a tooth abscess, a tumor, a hemotoma, a hundred other things...

Could be an abcess, could be an infected salivary gland, could be mumps. Go get it checked out. Your mouth is a part of your head, where your eyes, nose, ears, and brain also reside, and you don't want an infection in your mouth to bust loose and infest all those important parts of your body. It's serious and she needs to get it checked out ASAP.
