A curved needle wouldn't work. Think about it... The needle needs to go straight through one end and out the other. A curved needle wouldn't go straight through, thus the piercing wouldn't turn out right. It would even make getting the piercing take a bit longer. Yes, the jewelry is curved, but that's mainly because of all the movement that goes on in the tummy area from twisting, bending down, and sitting. A straight barbell would irritate the piercing and wouldn't sit right. Curved barbells just fit more naturally.

Straight, hollow tube needles are used for all piercings. You friend probably thinks otherwise because navel jewelry is commonly a curved barbell/banana bell. I have 6 navel piercings and ALL OF THEM were done with a straight needle.

However, I have seen curved needles, but I can see that needle causing some very crooked piercings if not used very carefully.

No the needle they use is shaped in a U, they use a clamp to pull the skin and they thread the needle through the marked spot. After that is done, they take the needle out and put in the hoop. I stings at first but, theres really no pain.
