The answer is usually to be found in the geography and climate of a country.
Natural resources in terms of fertile land with enough (but not too much) rainfall, length of seasons and severity, e.g. are there occasional droughts, floods, severe storms.
Communications - is road building very difficult.
Links with other countries - by sea, are there good natural harbours, by land, are there mountains blocking the way.
Natural flora and fauna - can the local plant life be adapted to useful crops, can the local animals be domesticated.

Politics also play a part, but this is usually the case when the economics of a country are marginal, because stable government requires quite a lot of surplus economic capacity.

Foreign aid really only helps when a country has good resources but is lacking in education, technology and industrial investment.
In countries with poor resources, aid only helps to increase the population, which then causes further difficulties and suffering.

We are the lucky ones, because of where we have been born.

There are poor countries because the people there that cannot support themselves decide to have 7+ children. They do not care that they cannot support the kids or themselves. In other words, there are too many people, and not enough space or resources to go around.

If we just left them alone the people that couldn't be supported would die off and the country would be in equilibrium. Instead we send them aid so now they can support more people. Now even though the country can only support X people, there are X + Y. If we stop aid at this point Y people will die. So we give them more and more resources, so now the country has way more people that it can support X + Y + Z.

We should just leave the poor countries alone, so that they can decide for themselves if they are happy with their standard of life. If they aren't, they need to get their population down to a sustainable level that the country is able to support.

Because those in power find it is easier to control a poor population, than a wealthy one. That is not to say that America is not the same either. If you check the statistics of all of the Native Americans that live on reservations in the most inhospital places in the United States you will see that politicians want to keep those people in their place by keeping them poor. By treaty the U.S. was supposed to be putting money into a special fund for the Native American peoples to use for when times got really bad. Well, times are really bad for them right now and the politicians in Washington spent all of the $50 billion dollars that was originally in the special fund and are now arguing about how to replace it with tax dollars when they are the ones who took it illegally and spent it on their own pork barrel projects. So why don't they go to jail or get their salaries cut until it is paid back? Because they are politicians and that is the way the government has always run things. Steal from the poor to supplement the rich.

Saying that Rich countries get rich from poor countries is just like saying smart people get that way at the expense of the stupid. Or hardworking people make their living at the expense of the lazy. That's just stupid.

Generally its caused by the lack of opportunity or motivation due to a centrally controlled economic system (in the poor country).
The poorest countries are usually the most leftist countries.

Different social economic groups don't share the resources like the United States.

For instance Korea deems it important to have a million man army, the 4 strongest army in the world.

Their leader Kim Jon il puts on a big colorful show for the rest of the world. He lives in a palace and behind the scenes he has 500,000 to one million people literally starving to death in squalor.

It mostly comes down to education. That is why so many are poor here in the U.S. Another reason is the governments usually do not support manufacturing, trade, and agriculture. The business climate is so hostile that businesses do not want to locate there even if wages are low.

Britain, France, and Spain used to rule the world. They have socialism now.
In 20 years, they will be Third World Banana Republics. Without any bananas.

Because they are socialist and the dictator keeps the people hungry so they will not have enough energy to fight back, and are more worried about their next meal then where to get a gun and start a revolution. Just ask any Iraqy or N. Korean or Red Chinese or Cuban or any one in N. Africa

Many poor countries have a very instable government and lots of militias and insurgents. Leaders are often inable to strengthen the nation's economy and are inable to actually lead. Many are even corrupt.
