the lighter .177 pellets fly faster in the same type gun
since they reach the target quicker the trajectory is flatter
the .22 will have a bit more punch to it due to its bigger mass
the trajectory issue gets to be a problem at longer ranges
dont forget the .20 cal or 5mm
this a really nice happy medium
excellent performer
downside is i have to order online to find pellet suppliers as opposed to walking into a walmart store
that is something i am willing to do as i really enjoy the 20

I own a couple, a Feinwerkbau(FWB) 124D and a Webley Hurricane, both are .177, so I'm biased towards the .177

.177 have higher velocity and .22 will see less diversion in a breeze.
.22 would have higher killing power unless you use .177 gold plated tungsten cores (Gamo). These latter also have higher muzzle velocity than lead (1,250'/sec versus 1,000'/sec)

for hunting< .22, for casual use, .177
