I have a shar pei who is a female, about 3 or 4 years old. i just got her from my sister, and I've had her about 3 weeks. She barks at everything and at nothing...constantly. Otherwise, she is very well behaved, and very loving. i was just curious about other people's shar pei's, and wanted to know if they seem to bark more than other dogs in general - or if i'm the lucky owner of one who barks more than usual! thanks!

My friend was a Sharpei breeder. Her dogs were quiet..However, incessant barking is a sign of stress. she may be homesick, or otherwise stressed..Many rescue dogs will bark constantly.
You can safely give her Chamomile tea, to calm her for a few hours. As she gets used to dealing with her world in a less stressed way, you can stop giving the tea..However, offer another alternative to keep her calmer..such as Kong chew toys..Or a rope toy soaked in low salt chicken broth and dried overnight in the oven..Thse work as pacifiers...
Give her Chamomile tea, to help her calm down.
Chamomile tea works very well, and is safe for her. Dump it out of the teabag, and use 1 teaspoon for small breed, up to 1 tablespoon for a large breed. Mix it in a little canned food, such as Mighty Dog, or Cesar's, and give as often as she needs to relax, It will keep her happy, but reduce stress. It can be given as needed.

Hi, vet tech here...In my experience..Every time I either adopted a dog or took one home..It took about one month or more for the dog to get use to all the different sounds in the new environment for it to stop barking at everything! It seemed like every little noise the dog would bark at day and night and I think it is because it is getting use to what is a threat and not a threat to its environment and new surroundings!! Unless the dog is known as a constant barker, I would assume it is in a transition phase. If it is imperative that the dog stop barking there is always the non harmful citronella collar .

I've worked with plenty of shar pei's and I noticed that some were more barky than others, I think that sometimes they are bored and just want to hear themselves...LOL. Sometimes dogs in general will bark and bark and bark, there is nothing you can do....You should ask your sister is she used to do that when she was with her....Another thing is, maybe she misses her, even though it is hard to tell if that is causing her barking.

Not sure about that breed in particular, but you can stop nuisance barking by taking her to obedience classes (or puppy school if she's little). They'll tell you what to do . Our puppy usually stops if you say "NO!" in a really firm voice. Shouting doesn't work, it riles them up more. Classes are cheap and it's a good way for her to meet other dogs.
