I have been looking at this website http://www.regap.org/
it just seems like a cruel sport, the poor dogs. When I move out, I'm going to adopt a retired greyhound!

In what way are you claiming the sport of greyhound racing is cruel?

Have you ever even watched a greyhound run? Have you ever seen the sheer joy in a running greyhound? They're doing what they've been bred to do and love to do, for thousands of years.

The racing of these dogs in itself is in no way cruel. The problem is that kennels are way over-breeding them, the dogs who lose are destroyed if not adopted, they spend the majority of their lives (once adults) kenneled, but the racing itself is what they love to do!

I've lived in two different communities where greyhound racing was a major sport, but I personally know on one who supports the industry. Greyhounds are beautiful animals and I know quite a few people who have adopted retired hounds. They make excellent pets, but they have a very high metabolism rate and they can not be allowed to get too hot.

Do we need to keep going over this again and again? The facts have not changed.

1. They are not starved or mistreated. A dog starved or left in a small cage would NOT WIN! They are athletes, not roly poly Labs! EVER seen a chubby human sprinter???

2. Almost ALL are rehomed or go to a breeding farm.

3. They are not FORCED to run, LOL!!! They LOVE to run!

4. MOST owners handlers LOVE their dogs! Of course, there are always a few bad ones, just as there is in ANY dog sport!

It is so sad that many GH rescues have AR leanings and continue to spread their misinformation.

The idea that it is better for them to spend their days laying on a couch instead of staying in prime physical condition doing what they love is ridiculous.

Good post Ragapple! Nice to have a few others here who know Hounds!

They are taking WAY worse of a rap than they deserve, and much of the rederic is so patently false anyone with a brain should be able to see through it. Tell me in an athletic endeavor who is going to win -a starved, parasite ridden animal who's never allowed outta a small pen & so is terribly unfit or a animal at the peak of nutrition, & excersised to the peak of fitness???

AS for the destruction of thousands of dogs -it may be noted that the official rescue figure for the number destroyed is larger than the number resistered (hummm) and THE SPCA DESTROYS MILLIONS.

And by the way its compleatly totally impossible to MAKE a greyhound run (no Jockey) they think chasing things (ANYTHING) is more fun than a barrel of monkeys

NO Grayhound is bad! Good for you for trying to adopt one! You are right, the dogs need to be pittied and the sport stopped!!!

I go to the races at least once a week and I love it. The dogs are very well cared for. It wouldn't make sense for the owners and trainers to mistreat them.

oh god no thats horrible when I was younger my neighbors were into that sort of thing and they would starve their greyhounds it would make it practice harder like they would make it chace some sort of food item. They would whine and whine all day.
