It has some build-up from the straightening product I use. It sometimes smells like it is burning.

If the surface is metal, you should be able to clean it with rubbing alcohol to remove the product residue. Just moisten a washcloth with it and rub the surfaces until the icky junk comes off.

Get a wet towel and clean it while it is hot like you would do a clothes iron but be careful

When it's cool, wet a towel with water and rub the build-up. Anything other than that will hurt it.

an s.o.s pad with alcohol usually does the job.
