Speaking from personal experience, they don't want to see their child make a permanent decision based on a whim. For instance, I have two tattoos that were done a year apart, each on spring break. My parents thought that I would change my mind a year or two later. It has been about ten years now and I still have my tattoos. I do not regret the decision, however I made choices on my tattoos so that the design would not offend or go out of style. It is ultimately a personal decision, so make a smart choice and try to think like you would in ten years. Good luck!

Well tattoos are permanent. I know I thought long and hard about my tattoos as well as where on my body they were inked. Some parents do not think you will do enough thinking and get whatever you think would look cool and not enough consider the repercussions of a tattoo and its placement.

Some parents do. The problem is , they're permanent and young kids getting them aren't thinking ahead to working in a corporate environment where they are frowned on. Two, girls who get them on their lower back don't realize that once they are of child bearing age, will not receive an epidural if needed during labor, as they will not give it through any tattoo. Three, because if your decision to get one is based on wanting to be different, now you are in a majority of inked people, being different now is not to be inked, pierced etc. You want to be different? Be the best person you can be and make your mark on the world that exemplifies the morals and lessons your parents instilled in you. What you do is a reflection on them and how they raised you. Just how the world works. If they weren't good parents, succeed in spite of them, not because of them.

B/C only a few ppl back in their day had tattoos and the ones who did werestereotyped as Rebels or Gangsters. Nowadays it is really common and Ithink our generation will be a lot more opened minded.

Most of em think it's a sign of rebellion. If they are highly concerned about appearances, they may be concerned how it will make them look as parents to other people. And sometimes, it's just that they have lived a lot longer than you and know that sometimes what you like as a teenager you won't like when you're 30 or 40, and it'll still be there. (Like, on your wedding day, when you're in the workforce, when you're a parent, etc.....)

I wouldn't know...both my parents have quite a few tattoos, and let me get my first one at 16, so I I've never had to deal with that issue.

They understand the permanence of some youthful indiscretions. There are a lot of plastic sugeons making big money taking tattoos off of 40 year old women.

because parents think that their child is perfect and to make a permanent marking is hurtful to the perfect image.
i know that i have a lot of tattoos, but if/when my children decide to get some i know it will be hard not to be able to control what they get or where they get it.
there is also this stereotype that is associated with people who have tattoos, and i don;t think any parent want to view or have their child viewed in that stereotype.

Because most think that tattoos make someone look like a criminal, that was my parents objection to me getting one anyway.
