Give the cat some space. After a while (this may be several days), work on building a relationship with the cat. What happened right before you tried to handle her? That may also contribute to why the cat is mad and stuff. It is something that will take time and you may find that this cat is just not the social creature you want. Remember, cats have personalities, too.

You should probably just accept that this is your cat's personality. We have a cat like that. She hates to be picked up. However, she will occasionally come sit with a person and want to be patted. But it has to be the cat's decision, not the person's. That is just the way this cat is. We like her as a quirky cat, and accept that she's not especially cuddly. She is social and likes to sit in the room with people and be talked to - just hates being picked up.
Our cat who hates to be picked up is easily stressed out. There is a plug-in thing you can buy at Petsmart that seems to calm her down. It was recommended by the vet. It helps.

Gotta face reality - - - certain cats do not like to be handled. The best that you can do is to make it her choice. One method is the surrender gesture - - - stretch out flat on floor as if maybe dead and wait patiently until Kitty stands on chest to determine if indeed you are alive. Once a cat is a non-touchy cat there is not a whole lot you can do. When I have to carry my PUMA cat, I hold him firmly while whispering apologies into his ear. Despite nearly eight years together he does not like anyone picking him up even when being confronted by rabid dogs!
Peace...

Depending how old your cat is, she could be very old and have arthritis all over- or she should have some kind of cancer that hurts when you pick her up.
Otherwise it sounds like she could have gone ferrel- that is, the cats gone emotionally wild in which case have her put down.
Take her to the vet before you do anything drastic ok? Good Luck

Most cats don't like to be picked up or held. The only way to get to hold a cat is to rub its tummy in a fast circular motion while chanting "chummy wum" over and over again. Then just swoop him up by the tail and then cradle him. Your cat will let you hold him and he won't be mad.

I just adopted a cat who doesn't like to be picked up and held much. I would start by leaving her alone at first, and then start by sitting by her on the floor and petting her. do this for a few days, then try to have her sit on or over your foot or leg...and pet her for a while. continue with this gradually getting her in your lap while sitting on the floor, and gradually work with her until she feels comfortable with you picking her up.

Not all cats like being picked up. Or maybe it's how you're handing her?
If it's sudden, take her to the vet and see if she's got anything in her system that might be causing her discomfort, like worms or ulcers, etc.

Hi I have 3 cats, none like to held longer than a minute...lol. I think it makes them feel trapped...like they can't get away if they need to. I think it's pure instincts that cause this. Nothing you are doing. I learned that it's better to let them come to you. Play with toys, like shoe strings or milk rings, are my cats' favs...and then pet them while they are playing. After a while of this they will come to you for attention. Also, I limit feed mine, as in they are fed 3 times a day, I don't leave food out for them all the time. So when they want to be fed, they will rub on you and want you to pet them so they can have their food...lol. I have to feed them this way because one of my cats will not stop eating and he started gaining weight, but the benefits are they know you are the provider and will come to you for attention. So if you want more attention from your cat, make sure you are the one to feed her, and give her water, she will then see you as her mother figure. None of my cats are lap babies either, I had one who was, he loved being held and curling up in your lap, but most cats are not like that, it just depends on their personality, so don't take it personally, I'm sure she loves you!
Also, if she is a new cat to your home, keep her in your room for a couple of weeks, put the food, cat litter, water, in your room, do not make her do anything else, don't pick her up or make her do anything, just play with her and pet her...she will come to you and see your room as a safe place to be. Then when you let her out in the rest of the house, she will go to your room to sleep or relax, as she will know that room better. I did this with all my cats when I first brought them home, until they got used to being there. I kept them in my son's room...they still hang out there when they want to sleep or if they get get scared they run under his bed, it's their safe room.

Baby fusses like a wild thing when I pick him up too. I've got where I sneak up on him and pet him till he's awake, then leave...he's getting more friendly, as he remembers that he liked the lovey when he was a little one. Give her time, and pet her where she sits. We have one that we just let sit beside us, then pet. She purrs a lot when we do that, so I guess she's happy!

well, as a cat lover, i know that all cat's personalities are different, and some cats just dont like to be handled- there is a possibilty that you can train it away, but sometimes cats are just like that- thats what makes them cats is that they are so unique in personality and character
