i was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. I have not worked in months, therefor i fell behind in my car payments; have no home to call my own; and is really financially in a bind. My husband is no help to me. He walked out over a year ago. I've really tried to stay afloat. It is really hard. I just recently was told there are more masses, therefor putting me in the IV stage, which is the last. I just received approval for ssi and medicaid. But I am so far behind on finances, i don't know what to do or where to turn. I appreciate the help I've received, SSI approval but it is a shame that it had to come so late (waiting bump my condition from stage III to IV. Please someone help me out of this hole. Direct me to the nearest organization for assistance for cancer patients and their financial hardships.

First, and formost, my heart goes out to you. I am 55 and am going in next week for my 3 yr. check. My dad died at age 30 of colon cancer and my sister died at age 34 (on her BD) of colon cancer. I understand how hard this must be for you.

Try calling your local Social Services for assistance and also your local Cancer Society. They will send somone out to talk to you. They did for my sister and helped her with some finances, and a hospital bed to make her more comfortable, and some other things.

God Bless you. I will say prayers for you in church.

Maybe you could add you nearest capital city or state to your question for assistance from smaller local organisations. I'm just guessing your America so I have been doing some net searches for you as I'm in Australia (if you were in Aus, I would be able to help more) I know what you are going through, my daughter had Leukaemia. My husband and I couldn't work we had to take care of a sick child and 2 other smaller children. We got some help but we still fell far behind and had debt collectors at our door wanting to take our cars. If you can get assistance from a social worker or a financial councillor it does help, they Maybe able to tell you your rights. The hospital you are getting treatment from should have a social worker. I'm going to add some links for you they may help as I'm in another country, I'm not sure how much. You need to ring or get someone close (family, friend) to ring local organisations tell them your story and ask for assistance, even a small donation will help. I hope you get some help soon, financial stress is the last thing you need.

I would contact the hospital that you are being treated at. Or on the web look up colon cancer sites and maybe there is some information there. Have you contacted your creditors and explained the situation? Maybe they can just accept what payments you would be able to pay no matter how little. That way it is showing you are sincere in trying.

Contact the American Cancer Society. Do a search for organizations in your area. Find a social worker at your hospital. They should be able to help you with finding help.

Without knowing your location, it's impossible to direct you to nearest one. Contact the social workers at the hospital you're being treated at - they're full of resources for things like this. (Often, the hospitals have funds set up for cases like this.)
