Yes, some might be lazy and unmotivated, but this question makes me think of a former first grade student I had years ago. He was such a talented pianist (he was a level 4 out of 6 in the solo festival, which is usually achieved by students in middle school or high school.) He HATED playing because he was forced to. It's sad to think that all that talent will be wasted because he will probably quit and never play again when he is older. Another first grader was taking violin, piano, language lessons (and probably other things too.) She was actually heard saying that she never has time to play and be a kid. I just started reading a book called "Hothouse Kids" by Alissa Quart. I am only a few pages in, but it's interesting to see how talented, smart kids who feel like they had no childhood end up acting as children when they are adults.

some are naturally lazy and have a tendancy to not do homework. for example, a student may be excellent at math, but be lazy at doing math homework. This is the main cause of low marks.
Another reason could be getting distratcted from school through entertainment. some students prefer video games over studying and decide to use their talents differently (In this case, in virtue of video games).
In addition, another reason is that they find chatting and 'hanging out' with their friends very important and thus get distracted from school and forget the hierachy in life.
I'm a student myself, and these have been my main reasons for losing motivation and doing bad at school. I'm not a bad student though, my average is ~95.
Hope this helps!

How do I say this?
Not to sound like a braggart, but I am currently in a gifted magnet class. In sixth grade, almost everybody hated us for being such high achievers and perfectionists. It was like our class number was branded on our heads for all to see..."622". Random people would approach me and say "Are you in Magnet (also known as ASTOR)?" When I would say yes, they would walk away in small cliques, muttering about me. Whenever we raised our hands in class, we were told by our classmates to "stop making such magnety answers." It was as if it was a crime to be intelligent. People stopped talking in class. Friends of mine withdrew into small corners, and there was always one or two who would cry about it. Now, in my new grade, it is better, but I strongly believe the answer to your question is that we are misunderstood.

Motivation may be a factor. And maybe they aren't challenged enough. And maybe they are worried about other stuff- family situations, etc. If someone is hungry, they won't care a whit about learning new stuff! They just want to eat...
