Wow, 11 answers before mine and most of the are wrong!

Ford and GM are completely different. Over their histories some engines have been better than others, but most have been generally dependable, with notable exceptions (GM's 5.7 liter diesels, for example). My 350 chevy is sitting on 195,000 miles right now, and I would be driving it today if my kid didn't wreck it!

Fords are not necessarily bigger - in fact GM has the HP advantage in 1/2 ton pickups right now. I'm sure that will change with Ford's next truck.

As a mechanic I can say a few things. I have worked on a lot of cars and can say it depends on what you like.
#1 some people like fords and others GM
To me as a mechanic is fords are a lot harder to work on
Most V8s fire in an order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
Fords on the other hand 1-5-3-6-2-4-7-8
This by todays standards is a little screwy
Most Gm cars engines turn clickwise- Ford conter clockwise
I do repair fords but I dont like them.

A V6 has a block that is angled at 90° or 60° and has 3 cylinders on each side. The straight 6 has one long block w/ the cylinders aligned in one straight line. The straight 6 is a very smooth running engine, but I hardly ever see one, I saw one on an old Mustang and recently on a BMW. The smoothest of the V6 engines is the 60° but I think the 90° is more common. I think it just has something to do w/ the ease of manufacturing.

GM's are much better they last nearly forever. Old Fords are ok, but the new ones are crap.

GM's are cold blooded, & Ford's are more likely to blow because they will run on low oil until it's too late.
