First, I think everyone has preferences. Sometimes, these preferences can be extraordinarily kinky, and other times, they can be fairly mild. But since in this society, we are taught never to discuss them, it's hard for anyone to know whether their preference is a common one or one that is truly unique.
My example is that I have a bit of a nylon fetish. I like to see women wearing tights or hose. I can't explain how or why I developed this fetish, but it's there. For the longest time, I thought that I was a freak, but I have learned that it's actually not that uncommon. Thanks to the internet, you can nearly certainly find someone who shares in your fetish as well. Maybe.
