Okay so I have a best friend who wants to get married on a cruise. She's already looked into the prices and she estimates that every guest will have to pay about 4,000$ for all the travelling and expenses. Now me and my fiancee find out that she's also expecting wedding presents. Is this normal? Or is she asking too much?

That is outrageous! You are supposed to be invited to a wedding as a GUEST. You are asked to be there to bare witness to their union not spend four thousand dollars on travel. I would explain that your wedding gift to them is your presence.

Tell her to expect a very small wedding. $4000 per guest? That's ridiculous! If she's adamant about the cruise idea, politely decline her invitation. Explain to her that you and your fiance are saving up for your wedding and can't afford to spend that much at this time. Give her a nice $20 gift card to Target.

She's asking too much. They should foot a good chunk of the bill in this situation. You have to really want to do the cruise and consider it something you would do regardless if she was getting married. You never know, she could be divorced next month, next year, or who knows when... odds are against lasting marriages these days. Eloping... it's much cheaper and those who get involved and put out for the event won't feel so put off when the marriage fails.

She should not be looking for wedding presents from the people who come on the cruise with them. That should be your present to her "your presence" ha ha After the cruise though, maybe put together an album of pictures from the cruise as a special gift for them!

Yes, wedding presents are normal.
Expecting your friend to go on a week vacation to attend your wedding, & then the cost is not normal.
The Bride & Groom should pay the $4,000 for the travelling and expences.

I'd tell her to go on the cruise and get married and that I would love to see the pictures later. I wouldn't put out $4000 to attend the wedding and honeymoon of anyone.

I would say that if it is within your means to go on the cruise and get her a present, then do it! She is your best friends, after all. If it isn't within your means, then I would choose the cruise or the present. You wouldn't be taking the present with you on the cruise anyways, because she wouldn't be able to get it home (unless you give her money)...I would say that it all depends on your financial situation.

wow! If your friend is having a destination wedding, she should pay for all costs to guests to attend her wedding. However, if the guest are required to foot the bill, she should not expect gifts. I would not want to inconvience my guest to the tune of $4000. That's just rude.

Asking WAY too much. As a bride myself, I don't expect gifts from anyone... PERIOD. If someone wants to give us a gift then that is generous but anyone who EXPECTS a gift at all is rude (in my opinion). And I especially don't expect gifts from anyone who must pay to travel.. and anyone who is paying for a dress or tux that is in the bridal party. Never mind if someone was paying $4000 just to attend!

She's asking WAY too much and she's being incredibly rude and naive if she thinks anybody is gonna fork over that much money! They should get married on the cruise BY THEMSELVES and once they're back THEN have a reception.
