For example my son is around my mom's akita all the time and has never had a reaction and we took him around a litter of golden retrievers and he started to sneeze. The Akita sheds quite a bit as does the golden retriever. I didn't know if one long haired breed is more prone to allergies than another.

actually, it is my understanding that allergies are caused by the animal's dander.. not hair. this includes the saliva from that dries on their coat, flakes off and then is ingested through nasal passages. I also discovered that groomed dogs don't shed their dander as much as dogs who never get bathed.

while it's true that it's dander that people are allergic to, it could also be something else around the dogs that your son is allergic to. dogs tend to be magnets for other common allergens and since the akita sheds a lot it also eliminates those allergens along with its fur. the golden retriever, however, does not and carries the allergens around with it for a long time.

Yes its the same with me! Your son has been desensitized to your mothers dog. But every dog is slightly different! Ive seen an allergy specialist and they say its normal. So if your thinking of a new puppy it could take a few weeks for your son to get used to the new dog. With me i had to take allergy tablets for 2 weeks then i was fine! Please see your doctor first though to check!

This has to do with the amount of dander on the dog's skin.
