Honestly, the ones I respond to and seem to be most successful are ones that cut out the gimmicks. My high school sent out a letter to alums and parents with a list of the things they were looking to buy or improve on. You donated as much or as little as you wanted and could actually select what they went to.
So I bought glaze for the ceramics class...well, at least I checked that box and donated accordingly. It made me feel better knowing that little money was spent by the school, that some other organization like a candy bar maker or magazine subscription house didn't get any of the money because every dime went straight to the school, and it was an honest and direct way for the school to ask for help and for me to give it.

As atrain821 mentioned above, magazines are good for raising money, but these days you don’t have to buy anything to do it and the whole process can be done ONLINE through companies like Efundraising. So you don’t have to deal with order forms or payments or delivering anything. Magazine subscriptions have a lot of profit margin built in, so there's plenty of money to be made, even when using a third party service.
There’s a bunch of free fundraisers listed at sites like http://www.fund-raising-ideas-center.com.
Or you can do a search on Goo…er…Yahoo ;-) for “fundraising ideas” or “free fundraisers” and get tons of ideas.

you should have a magazine sale like go make an order forum on micrsoft word and then print it off. then after the last turn in date for the fundraiser is over, go online to the sites of the magazine company and purchace teh magazine subscriptions that the costumer ordered. but instead of puting the actuall price that they sell for charge like $5 extra so you make a profit.
ex: sports illistraited for kids = $19.99 for a 1 year subscription so you charge $24.99 for a 1 year subscription. then you make a $5 profit for your school club

ihow about having a chinese-action?? our 8th grade does one everyyear for their class trip..local area business donate products, gift certificate, families donate things that are in well condition and you sell 10 chances for $ each item is displayed then if its something they would like they put 1 of there 10 chances in the can for that prize then when everyone puts there chances you draw for a number that wins the prize..another thing we did in school when i was younger was we had action ,person in the class "auctioned " off for a day to do whatever they wanted like lawn work, babysitting, errands etc..and had adult supervisors..it made an awful lot of $ because people got chores done for a low price ..or plan a day ahead where you advertise your group is available for a set price to do a certain task, lawn work, simple chores,..offer a babysitting service on certain nights...do a benefit dinner ,those are big hits..also there are several companies that just make donations anually to class trips or education like wal-mart,target,hannaford,shaws,many department stores law offices etc..that would just take a phone call or a trip to the business tell them hat the monies for and ask for donation..good luck thare are so many avenues to get around the red tape I too had the same problem with girlscouts..one more thing our pta throws a spring festival every year each class sets up a game like baloon pops, bean bag throw etc..each game is worth a ticket we sell tickets for like 10 for 1dollar and there we have a carnival like thing with just games we sell donated foods like hotdogs soda nachos cookies brownies etc have a kareoke contest ,and the chinese auction use your imagination..if you had a digital camera and someone able to take anddevelop good pics then you could do pictures with the school mascot, easterbunny santa whoever..if you cant have a bottle drive can the local bottle redemption except donations for your orginization and keep tally for you through a certain date??Again I'll stop for now LOL good luck

Sometimes a fast food restaurant will assist... however you will need manpower to help sell the drinks and deliver the food. Here in Texas, we have a place called Sonic... they let high shcool students deliver the food and drinks ... but they don't prepare it and they have a sign posted for their fund raiser.

How about creating and publishing a cookbook. My neighbor did this for the library she works at. Check this out.
