Well, if you do not have a legitimate copy of Windows, it could be a legitimate popup indicating that. You would have to buy a licensed copy of the software. It would help to see the actual error. It is possible you have some ad software running on your computer or any other number of unintential programs acquired while browsing the internet that may have installed and is acting as a worm or trojan, etc.

If you have a legitimate version of Windows, you may find it easiest to back up the data you want to keep (such as onto a CD or removable hard drive) and then reinstall the entire operating system based on your computer's restore procedures (assuming you are not computer saavy).

If you are computer saavy and you have a legitimate copy of Windows, you may to try use some other software/freeware to eliminate the bug you acquired. You could always call Microsoft and explain the problem to them. Just be prepared to be able to validate the original software for the computer.

If this is a new problem, I would go to "system restore" and restore the system to an earlier date. A week or two, or at least a date before this problem started.

You will not lose any work you have saved to programs like Microsoft Word, or Media Player; but if you have joined any message boards or anything else (between that date and now) that requires installation of cookies on your system, it will wipe them out.

If that doesn't fix it, you can try updating your system. Just go into your control panel and click on "automatic updates." It could just be that your Windows needs to be updated.

Good luck.

This is NOT adware or spyware or maleware. This is from the Windows Validation Tool that is new and the ONLY way to get rid of it is to follow the steps to obtain a valid key code. If you'll follow every single step to the end, the VERY LAST option you're given is Recieve a Free Key Code, use that one if your OS came with your computer. All other options, you must pay for a new key code. Just keep following the steps to the end for the free one to be sent to you. This is a ploy from Microsoft to get you/all of us to upgrade to Windows Vista when it comes out! :-(

If you only want to get rid of the pop up download (xp-AntiSpy) and tick the appropriate boxes it is self explanatory.
