Actually they can drown if they don't have a constant supply of oxygen in their blood stream and their swim bladders (the sac inside their bodies that keeps them upright in the water) aren't working properly/have been damaged ... generally you only see the end resut of one of these things (apart from diseases) when you see them floating on the surface (or lying on their sides at the bottom) .....

apparently sharks will drown if they stop swimming. trout also if they are facing down stream, [thats with the flow of the river]
though going back to sharks, i've seen tv where they actually show sharks sleeping on the sea bed...no pun intended
