Cheapest accommodation in HK is on the Kowloon side of town, on Nathan Rd. there are 2 "Mansions" Chungking Mansion and Mirador Mansion. Both buildings feature multiple hostels curry restaurants etc etc. Budget travelers go here, a bed from around HK$60-70. Close to a subway, but the cheapest way into Central Island is taking the Star Ferry for HK$1.7 (lower deck).

I usually pay less than $30 at the Tatami Hampton Hotel off Nathan Rd. Not bad considering the location. Nice young staff, clean rooms, self-contained small (very very very small...) rooms. You can stay in many guest houses for about $10 a night. Not bad. Why pay more for a room to sleep in? There's so much you can do with your money in HK.

those 3 stars hotels are good enough for me, when i go there for shopping & FOOD!!!
hotels i've stayed in... yau ma tai, kowloon area:
eaton
majestic
nathan
the reasons why i often picked these hotels is because, its near to the subway (about 5 mins' walk), & a convenient area to shop along the 'ladies' mkt', temple street mkt, & jade mkt...

"Cheap" and "Hong Kong" seem to be mutually exclusive. I don't consider $70 per night (US) to be cheap. Unless you can speak chinese, and so negotiate yourself a cheap accomodation that way, I think you're SOL.
