A soul suggest that there is a higher power which placed the soul into the body. I would think that a atheist (like myself) would find the concept of a soul just as a magical or superstitious belief as a god.

"a lack of a few thing equates to no longer some thing." No, it would not. that's only a lack of a few thing. If there's a lack of sugar on your table, it would not propose there is not any table, no small white field, and no flower vase. also, atheists do no longer position self belief in atheism as a doctrine, yet they do trust the definition that that's a position of no longer believing in any gods. that's no longer a similar as having a conception in a faith, which consists of accepting the tenets of stated faith. There aren't any tenets, no dogma, no clergy, no assembly corridor, no philosophies linked with atheism.

This atheist doesn't believe in souls, but then, I must admit, I'm not entirely clear on what souls are.

Usually, if I ask, the person I ask starts talking about a lot of bunk in which I don't believe (either the immortal part of us, or something about connection to all things -- next thing I know they're in MagicLand, where I refuse to follow).

So, I guess, I'm not only godless, but soulless too.

This is why I don't get why people tell atheists to get out of the religion AND SPIRITUALITY section. Atheism is just no believing in god. It is not a religion, and has no set of beliefs and rules. Not all atheists believe in evolution..

I believe I have a soul and I don't think it has anything to do with God. When I die, my soul dies with me, it doesn't go to heaven or hell or wherever else people think souls go after death.

I see my soul as more of a driving force behind all of my actions based on previous experiences, knowledge and how my actions will affect someone else.

The word soul is used to define something bigger than our physical bodies, and the limitaions of our mind, but the abundance of our heart(soul) It is sad to believe that people would perceive someone who chooses not to believe in god the way that the general concensus does, is someone who does not believe in his own soul. I am sorry that people lack the compassion to understand.
I wish you well Jim Darwin, and stay true to yourself.

Yep, atheists can believe in souls. While it doesn't seem likely that many do, atheists can believe in heavens, hells, fairies, sticks turning into snakes, and all sorts of things which there is no evidence for. The only thing all atheists have in common is the disbelief in god(s).

When my father died, I was standing at his bedside in the hospital and I felt that the form laying there was not my daddy. I love the memories of him, his possessions, the fact that he would only wear white socks. The little things he did are implanted in my memory but I do not believe he is looking over me. I do not believe that there is some unkown. To do that would be very sad. I do savor the good times and remember the things he taught me in detail. I think happy thoughts when I think of him. I don't believe in make believe. He was only human.

Belief in God, God saves you, your soul goes to Heaven when you die. Your soul inside you is taken over by the Holy Spirit when you are saved and It guides you, helps your soul when in need, in doubt. (it= Holy Spirit)

Your soul is inside of you, it's what hurts when your heart is broken, it is what glows when you are happy, it is what gives you that extra burst of energy when you get excited, it's what helps you when you are so tired so exhausted you can't move but you have to, that burst of adrenaline.
The soul:
It's the inner essence of a person.
